Outdoor living spaces are a hot landscaping trend
by Patrick White

In a recent survey, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) asked leading landscape architects to name the top trends for 2008. Outdoor kitchens and fire pits were ranked as popular items, but many of the landscape architects polled noted an increase in requests for outdoor “great rooms.” (continue)

Green Routine
by Rocky Womack

During the summers of 2006 and 2007, many areas in the Mid-Atlantic region experienced drought conditions with hot temperatures. Golf course greens were stressed, leaving many clubs with spotty, burned or dried up turf where either heat had taken its toll or disease had overtaken them from too much watering. (continue)

Turfgrass Research Update
by Suz Trusty

Sports field managers across North America are becoming bolder in their experimentation with the types of turf they use on their fields. Proper Pruning
by Jenan Jones Benson

We've all heard the expression “experience is the best teacher,” and that is certainly true in arboriculture. Front line experience, coupled with scientific research, affects the accepted methods of care and, ultimately, tree health.

Fumigants of the Future?
by Jenan Jones Benson

Most growers have relied upon the soil fumigant methyl bromide for years. The move away from this ozone-depleting chemical, a provision of the 1987 Montreal Protocol, has many scrambling for efficient and cost-effective alternatives.
On October 5, 2007, the Environmental Protection Agency approved a one-year registration of iodomethane (methyl iodide), marketed as Midas by Arysta LifeScience. The first new soil fumigant to win EPA approval in 20 years, it is expected to be widely available.(continue)

Can You Profit on Power?
by Tony Kryzanowski

The potential nosedive in nitrogen oxides, mercury and sulfur dioxide emissions is not the only reason why Public Service of New Hampshire (PSNH) has spent $75 million to convert a portion of the Schiller Station coal-fired power plant to wood chips, but it was a good one.
The Schiller Station, located in the coastal city of Portsmouth, had operated three 50 MW coal-fired steam boilers since the 1950s. Now, one of the power generation units is burning wood biomass. In doing so, the Northern Wood Power Project has cut nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 70 percent, mercury by 90 percent and sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) by 95 percent. (continue)
